Success Lessons from X-factor show

Here is an article I recently submitted on EzineArticles:

I watched X-Factor on television last night and had one of those a-ha moments. It is one of those insights that we get that makes sense when something clicks in our mind. I would like to share the success lessons I learned in this article.

X-factor is a reality television show where contestants audition for a place to perform live on stage. Each week, they get an opportunity to shine and wow the audience. Viewers vote, and the following day, an elimination episode happens. The performer getting eliminated gets to grace the stage for a final performance, and the process repeats itself the following week.

There are four judges to provide constructive criticism after each performance. The judges are also experienced in the performance industry, and provide coaching and help the performers during the preparation week before the next big show.

It is a harsh competition. The performers have a week to polish their act, and whatever progress they have the previous week does not count for the subsequent show. Consistence does matter as a slip up just once may result in failure. They have to perform in front of critical judges as well as an audience, who if are not satisfied, can get you out of the race.

If you thought public speaking was difficult, this is a whole new level. Its not just singing in tune, they have to act and perform all to time. And they ideally should get it all right when the moment arrives.

What was the a-ha moment? It was a culmination of the judges comments on that episode. The constructive advice they provided were not just applicable to the individuals they talked to, they were relevant to us all.

One of the judges commented that while a performer could have done better that night, their background story might still see them through the competition. There was a newspaper article on her the previous day detailing her kind attitude and going on the show to make a difference, with the prize money going for a worthy unselfish cause.

Take home message: build a reputation and when there is good press giving praise to your efforts, a slip up may not be too disastrous. Work on portraying a self image that will sell for you.

You will notice that all the performers are talented. Sure, the audience and judges criticize that they do not sound as good, they did not nail it and so on. But it is all relative. While they may not be as good as their counterparts, they would trump us easily if we took them head on in a singing competition.

The lesson here is that however talented we are in any particular field, its the 'extra factor' that separates out those who are good and those who go on to achieve great things. This point of difference is vital, and is obvious when competing against those of equal capabilities. We need to develop this 'extra factor' to be successful.

Another important lesson was how easily it was to spot those who are savouring the moment and enjoying themselves when their time to shine arrives. Subconsciously, we get an immense feeling of support for that individual, giving it their all to show their talent. Ultimately, the usually end up the winner of such reality television shows. This is also the case in real life.

While X-factor is a reality TV show, these lessons are applicable to us all. We learn and we grow. Apply these lessons to your life to achieve greatness.
